Skin Care Routine Made Simple

Have you ever gone to a department store, Sephora, or the aisle in Target and gotten so overwhelmed by all the products?  Don’t get me wrong, I love all my products, I am a product junkie.  I love doing all the steps and layering the products, and having a different routine for every night of the week.   But lets get back to basics, what do you absolutely need?  This is for the girl who likes to keep it simple and easy, for those who are short on time or money.

**Skin Care Basics**

  1. Cleanse, both morning and night (get a cleanser that is ph balanced and is also a makeup remover, making this 1 step)
  2. Moisturize, both morning and night
  3. Eye Cream, night only
  4. Exfoliate, 2-3 times a week

That’s easy enough right?  Every morning all you have to do is cleanse and moisturize.  That will take no more than 2 minutes.  At night cleanse, exfoliate (2-3 times a week), eye cream, then moisturize.  That will take 3-4 minutes.  That’s it!  Simple Simple!!!

Fresh Soy Face CleanserCleanse- In my opinion, everyone should be using Fresh Soy face cleanser.  I discovered this cleanser 10 years ago.  Every time I try something new I always come back to it.  This cleanser is for all skin types, including sensitive skin.  It cleanses the skin and is a makeup remover and gentle enough for the eye area.  1 step, your skin is cleansed and makeup off. You can purchase a smaller size for $15 to give it a try (it will last 4-8 weeks) before purchasing the bigger one.

Another great option for a cleanser is Purity Made Simple.  This is also a 1 step cleanser/makeup remover.  It says it’s for all skin types.  But I think it is best for normal, oily, combination skin.

Moisturize- There are so many great moisturizers out there!  For the last 2 weeks I have been using Fresh Lotus cream. Fresh Lotus Youth Preserve Face CreamAmazing!  My skin is so even and smooth.  It makes a great base for applying my makeup.  This will work for all skin types.  If you are not dry, this can be used as your day and night cream.  For more oily to combination skin, try Fresh Umbriam Clay Oil-Free moisturizer.  This will regulate sebum production throughout the day.

If you need more moisture, use a night cream that is deep hydrating.  Try Boscia Sleep Mask or Fresh Peony Brightening night mask.  Both are incredible!!! If these night creams are giving you to much moisture, use every other night and use your daily moisturizer the other nights.  Both are found at Sephora.

Eye Cream- For something lighter use BioElements eye cream.  For something heavier and more moisturizing try Peter Thomas Roth eye cream.  To read more about eye cream click here.

first aid beauty facial radiance polishExfoliate- I am still in love with Lush Sea Salt Scrub.  This is great for all skin types and works awesome!  Something I recently tried is FAB Facial Radiance Polish.  I loved this because it’s very gentle (where the sea salt scrub is a little more aggressive) and left me feeling brighter.  The FAB facial polish is great for normal, dry, combination and sensitive skin.

Budget Friendly- For those on a budget and want beautiful skin, here is what I suggest.  For a cleanser try BioElements Flash Foam cleanser. This cleanses, removes dirt and makeup.  It’s for all skin types and only $21.  For a moisturizer: oily skin try BioElements Beyond Hydration ($22) and for normal, dry skin try BioElements Absolute Moisture ($19).  And to exfoliate, use a little raw sugar and gently massage on a damp face.

  1. Thanks! I have recently started cleansing, moisturizing, exfoliating, eye cream, and so on. I have also been using a nightly serum. I can’t believe the difference in my skin! It’s amazing!

  2. Thank you so much for this! I also am curious about what serums and things a woman in her 30s should be using…like what the process is .. Serum then retinol? Just needing a direction. There are so many options to choose from. (Ps I’m a dancer so I sweat a lot and have oily skin)

    1. At night, try peter thomas roth max complexion correction pads or dr dennis gross alpha beta peel. Use either of these to a clean face, then moisturize. This will clear up any extra sweat stuck in the pores and help regulate sebum.

    1. I will do a blog post on moisture needs over 50. Everything you are using should be gentle and non stripping. Night creams or sleeping mask is a must!

    1. Serums are used for all different reasons, what benefits are you looking for in a serum?

        1. I use Fresh Soy Face Serum. Apply to a clean face before your moisturizer. This will hydrate, brighten and has anti-aging properties.

  3. I’ve always used eye cream morning and night. Is that wrong?! Should I only use at night or was that just for your “stripped down” version? Thanks!!

    1. It is not wrong. Although for most people it is not necessary and it will make their makeup crease throughout the day. But if your skin needs the moisture, go for it!

  4. Really enjoy reading your blog!! I just changed my skin care routine to something more simple, I’m currently using almost all FAB products :)

    1. What are you using and how do you like it? I have been recently using more of their products and have loved everything I have tried so far.

  5. I absolutely love your tips!! Thanks so much. I do have a question. What do you suggest to lighten up dark spots? I have recently noticed a sun spot on my NOSE!!!!! Of all noticeable places!!! (Freaking out a bit, can you tell?) I have tried the brown sugar scrub with lemon juice and honey for a while but not seeing a difference at all. Got any suggestions?

    1. I have not personally used this, but I was just reading about this new product for dark spots. It’s by peter thomas roth, de-spot plus. You apply it to any area you want lightened and it will fade your sun spots, dark spots, etc. I would give that a try!

  6. I get so excited when you post a new blog!! Thank you so much for this! As far as serums go, is it best to apply it in the morning or at night? I’ve been doing mine in the morning, but I’m not sure if that’s the best time.

  7. Hello Rachel, let me just say I love your blog and I always love reading your new posts and all your advice and tips you give us is amazing. Now, I just wanted to give you a run down of my routine that I am doing right now and I feel like its not enough where I need to go buy a serum of some sort but like you say there are million products out there and I don’t know what would be good for me. To start off my make up remover is just an over the counter brand, its Equate Daily Face Wash which is what I use to remove my make up then I jump into using Lush Ocean Salt as a cleanser/exfoliate I tend to use this about twice maybe three times a week. Then I use the LUSH enchanted eye cream at night as well for my eyes. Then for my moisturizer I am actually using an old school product that I love its the St. Ives Timeless Skin Collagen Elastin Moisturizer.
So to end that I feel like I should be using a serum to protect and give my skin a glow effect as well but I am not sure, what do you recommend do I need it? I am 24 I will be turning 25 in July so I don’t know if I should start using more anti-aging products. Thanks again for your advice I appreciate it so much!!!

  8. I love your blog and have bought many items you have recommended! My question is what’s the difference between a sleep mask and regular moisturizer? I have been using the Boscia sleep mask and can’t really tell if it’s any different than when I used my morning moisturizer .

  9. Such an informative blog! Thank you :) I do have a question. Where would a weekly or biweekly facial mask fit in? After cleansing, before cleansing? I’m clueless! Also, reading through some of your comments, I notice many are asking about serums. I’m 23 years old, and suffer from oily skin and enlarged pores. One day I went into Sephora and asked what would help my oily skin, and they recommended Picture Porefect serum by Dermadoctor. It was the best $40 I’ve ever spent. I know $40 may seem like a lot, especially for a college student like myself, but it was so worth it. I’ve had it since January, I wear it just about everyday and I still have product. Although it hasn’t completely cured my oily skin, it has most certainly helped out so much! I hope this helps anyone.

  10. I may use eye cream only once a day, thanks for this routine though, it gave me some ideas about my skin care….

    1. A toner is typically used to rebalance your skin after cleansing. But if you use a cleanser that is ph balanced a toner is an unnecessary step. Why spend money and time on something that isn’t needed? After cleansing if your skin needs something else, that’s where a serum comes in.

  11. Thanks you for posting this! I’ve been using all kinds of expensive products and haven’t found any I really like so appreciate that you’ve tried them. Could also use your help on helping my dark under eye circles, I’m in my 40’s could you please recommend a product for two and when to apply. Thank you!

  12. I have been using for a few weeks now a serum right before I go to bed and I can’t believe the difference in my skin! I love it !

    Kate :*

  13. Hello, I love you blogs!!! I’m on my late 30s and have oily skin, what products do you recommend?

  14. Hello, I’m 39 years old and I’m confused about what serum I should be using. Should I use a face serum or an eye serum? I would like to attack the wrinkles I’m starting to see in my forehead area as well as the eye area. However, at the same time I would like my face to look bright and hydrated. Are Estee Lauder products any good? Please help Rachel, this is all new to me.
