Skin Care Regimen 101

All women want to look and feel beautiful.  Having glowing and beautiful skin all starts with how you take care of your skin.  Having a good skin care regimen is very important.  Your skin is the base for which you apply your make up.  So your finished make up look has a lot to do with how your skin looks.

Seaberry Moisturizing Face Oil

There are 4 different skin types: Normal, Dry, Oily, Combination.  Skin can also be Sensitive, which is more of a condition rather than a skin type.  Meaning, you can be dry and sensitive skin or oily and sensitive skin.  What is your skin type?

Combination Skin
This is a combination of dry and oily.  It can be mild or severe combination.

Sensitive Skin Redness, itching, burning, dryness, reaction to products.

freshHow to take care of your skin?
It doesn’t matter what skin type you have, there are some basic skin care rules that apply to everyone:

1.Cleanse your face and neck both morning and night.
2.Moisturize after you cleanse.
3.Use an eye cream every night.
4.Exfoliate 1-2 times a week.
5.Use a mask 1-2 times a month.

Normal Skin- Your job is very easy!  You don’t have any skin problems to think about.  As long as you are doing the above steps, you have all great skin your entire life.  Enjoy kate moisturizerit, you are lucky!

Dry Skin– If you have dry skin you are more prone to wrinkles and aging.  Using a heavy cream or oil at night, plus an eye cream is a must!  Use a cleanser that is mild, making sure it is not stripping away any natural oils you have.  The benefit to dry skin?  You rarely get a break out.

Oily Skin- Clay based products are your best friend!  Clay absorbs excess oil without stripping, irritating, or drying you out.  Do not over compensate for your oily skin.  Even though you are oily, you still need to moisturize.  Use a moisturizer that is ‘oil free’.  If you are excessively oily, only moisturize at night.  Oily skin is prone to break outs.  It’s from the excess oil mixing with sweat and dirt, then clogging your pores.  Properly cleansing is crucial!  Use a clay based mask once a week, it will really help!  The good news?  You probably won’t get a wrinkle until you are 60!

eyeCombination Skin- You will be a combination of remedies of both dry and oily skin.  Apply moisturizer to the cheeks only in the morning, and all over at night.  When you use a mask, apply the clay based mask to the t-zone and a moisturizing mask on the cheek area.

Sensitive Skin- There are different levels of sensitivity.  It may be a trial and error to find out what you are sensitive to.  The best products to use are ones that are extremely gently on the skin; without fragrance, alcohol, or harsh preservatives.  Always be gentle when cleansing or applying any products.

What products to use?
I have normal to dry skin and it’s slightly sensitive.  My husband has extreme combination skin.  He can get dry flaky skin on his cheeks while his t-zone is a water slide.  I have changed both of our skin care regimen so many times over the years.  Some things I have loved, some I have liked, and some I did not like.  It’s important to change it up once in a while and try new products.  Your body gets tired of the same old thing and your skin won’t respond the same after long term use.  Here is what we are currently using and loving.

For Me (dry and sensitive):
Cleanser- Fresh Soy Face Cleanser
Day Moisturizer- Kate Somerville Nourish Daily Moisturizerlush angels
Night time Moisturizer- Fresh Seaberry Moisturizing Face Oil
Eye Cream- LUSH Enchanted Eye Cream
Exfloiator- LUSH Sea Salt Scrub
Mask- LUSH Magnaminty

For my Hubby (combination skin):
Cleanser- LUSH Angels on Bare Skin <— This cleanser would work for combination or oily skin
Moisturizer (day & night)- LUSH Imperialis
Eye Cream & Exfoliator- Same as me
Mask- He currently won’t let me put a mask on him so I can’t recommend anything from experience.  Anything that is a clay based mask is where to start.

Finding the correct skin care products for you can be a journey, like finding the perfect pair of jeans.  The products that work for me may not work the same for you, even if we have the same skin type.  This is why I always get samples of everything!  I get a big enough sample to use it for 1-2 weeks at home.  In this amount of time I will know for sure if I love it.  Remember, if it’s liquid you can get a sample.  Stores like Nordstrom and Sephora are always happy to give you a sample of anything, you just have to ask.

Taking care of your skin does take time and effort.  But it’s worth your time.  It doesn’t matter how much weight I gain or lose, or what I’m wearing, if my skin looks beautiful I feel beautiful!

  1. Thank you!!! I use to have oily skin now I have dry skin and rosacea. Fun fun fun!!! It’s so frustrating because my skin looks like it’s broken out a lot because of the bumps from rosacea. A friends dermatologist suggested t-gel shampoo but use it on your face. I have tried Lush but not their skin care. I will have to give it a try!

  2. You & you sister are both so beautiful & talented. I love & gollow you both. I was wondering if you can give me some tips on how to start a blog/website. (mine would be about health) Any advise from you would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

  3. Hello, Thanks for the skin care regiman. I was interested on LUSH Magnaminty but I am not sure which one to get. I checked their website and they have different types. I would like to know which one is the one your sister Jaclyn Hill got. I’m confused! Please HELP! Love you and your sister.

      1. so i got the magnaminty mask and I’m pretty sure its what is breaking me out. I’ve used it twice now and i usually just have a little acne and whiteheads and scars on the sides of my cheeks and occasionally on my forehead (around that time of the month) but after using this, I’m noticing a crazy amount of texture on my face… is that normal? will it go away? what products will help with that? thank you for you help!

        1. I would try using products for acne prone skin. Brands like BioElements and Dermalogica have a good acne line. The Magnaminty mask is for deep hydration. I would suggest you get something that will dry and clear up your break outs.

  4. Have you ever tried Eminence Organics products? Just curious if you have an opinion on them. Thanks!

  5. I love your skin care and beauty tricks posts. You got me to try lush’s mask of magnetity. I find myself using it once a week after I exfoliate. Is that over doing it? I know you said to use a mask once a month.

    1. Thank you! You are not over doing it. Once a week is the most you should use a mask, once a month is the minimum. :)

  6. Hi, I watch your sister all the time and saw she said that you are an Esthetician. I looked through your whole blog and love it. This post jumped out at me and I did have a question for you. I seem to have normal to maybe dry skin on most of my face and then my T-zone (mostly the middle of my forehead and nose, and sometimes my chin) re super dry and flakey. I feel like I have tried everything from different moisturizers to changing my make up. I’ve gotten to the point that I want to try other products but i have spent so much money on products that don’t even work, why spend more! I thought you might have some suggestions for me. I was thinking about trying out lush products. I have something very similar to the clarasonic that I used about 3-4 times a week(when i see dry flakes) and then I use a moisturizer the ultra repair one, sometimes vitamin E oil or coconut oil. Then my makeup routine is physicians formula BB cream, maybelline 24 stay concealer with fit me concealer, rimmel stay matte transparent to set the concealer, and bare minerals original foundation. I like to set my face with nyx dewy spray. I take off my make up….I am lost please help!

    1. My suggestions would be to use an exfoliator 2-3 times a week and a mask 2-4 times a month. I use Lush Sea Salt Scrub and Mask of Magnaminty. If you have dry skin flakes your skin won’t be able to absorb any moisturizers you are putting one. Exfoliation is very important! If you have access to a stream room, this will help too. It sounds like your skin is very dehydrated. Increase the amount of water you are drinking. The standard 8 glasses of water a day is not enough for me. I drink closer to a gallon of water a day.
One more thing- if you use a product for a month and it’s not doing what you want, take it back. You shouldn’t be wasting your money on products that aren’t working for you.

      1. Thanks, I’ll have to try those recommendations out. I use this apricot scrub and a daily cleaner from clean and clear… are those products I should stay away from?

        1. Unfortunately, the apricot scrub and clean and clear are extremely drying and not very good products :(

  7. Hello, I am absolutely obsessed with your sisters channel and I watch all of her videos and she mentioned you and your blog in her latest video and so I decided to check it out to hopefully learn more about my problematic skin. This post stood out to me because I always labeled my skin as dry because I am VERY dry but I am also very acne prone with enlarged pores and blackheads on my chin, around my nose and my forehead. I guess that describes me as combination but I have never felt oily, in fact I always kind of wish I was oily instead of dry. I have very sensitive skin as well so I am always kind of scared to spend money on products that might dry me out even more or break me out or cause a bad reaction because I have already spent so much on products that do what I need. I was wondering if you have any suggestions for me, thank you.

    1. Lots of times you don’t know that you have oily skin because the products you are using are drying you out so much you think you have dry skin. Make sense? Lush has some great products for combination skin. They are not drying at all! They are listed in this post under combination skin. (it’s what my hubby uses)

  8. Bought the mask of magnaminty about a month ago and ended up falling in LOVE with it. I’ve been a little skincare obsessed lately with trying to find products that suit me and this post helped so much. As per Jaclyn and your suggestions, I’ve already ordered the seaberry face oil, sea salt scrub, as well as Kate’s nourish moisturizer. I’m so excited to get them and I’m crossing my fingers they work for me haha. Love your blog already and can’t wait to read more :)

  9. Thank you for the information! What are your thoughts on Kiehl’s products? I am trying an oil from them as well as a moisturizer, and it does seem as though my skin is not quite as dry. Do you have any product suggestions besides what you have already mentioned? Dry skin is the worst!

  10. Hi. I love this post. I have oily skin…do you have any suggestions for a clay mask? Preferably one that won’t break the bank? I just went to get a facial today for the first time and was told the same thing about a clay mask and after reading your post I think it’s a sign that I need to get one.

  11. I was wondering if you have any suggestions for a moisturizer for sensitive combination skin. I have previously used Dermalogica but where I am from it is hard to find so am looking for alternatives I could find at Sephora or Lush.

  12. Hi I love your blog! I was wondering do you use a clarisonic and how often would you recommend using it on slightly normal-dry / oily-dry combination skin? Also what do you recommend for black heads? I currently use my clarisonic Mia 2 every night with my fresh soy face wash, then Clinique face lotion toner, then a organic moisterizer, and I finish with joise maran 100% Aragon oil. I use glam glow youth mud once a month. Do you use a toner? Do I need to use a toner? This post was very helpful as I am just getting into skin care more since I am getting older now, 25. Thank you so very much!

  13. Hi there! I just discovered your blog, via Jaclyn’s videos. I loved reading this post, lots of great info. I’m not sure what my skin type is though and wondered if you could help? I use Aveeno’s Ultra Calming foam wash at night in the shower and I feel dry after with some flakes. In the morning I just rinse with water cause I don’t want to be flakey during the day. I use a moisturizer with spf (Simple is the name) from Target and then put on Bare Minerals powder foundation, as the day goes on I get quite greasy. Its gross. I do have fair skin and can be sensitive to products. I get redness and have large pores. I sometimes can get some acne too but not so much where I might lean towards an acne product. So I am not sure if I am considered oily or combination?
