Skin Care Regimen 101

All women want to look and feel beautiful.  Having glowing and beautiful skin all starts with how you take care of your skin.  Having a good skin care regimen is very important.  Your skin is the base for which you apply your make up.  So your finished make up look has a lot to do with how your skin looks.

Seaberry Moisturizing Face Oil

There are 4 different skin types: Normal, Dry, Oily, Combination.  Skin can also be Sensitive, which is more of a condition rather than a skin type.  Meaning, you can be dry and sensitive skin or oily and sensitive skin.  What is your skin type?

Combination Skin
This is a combination of dry and oily.  It can be mild or severe combination.

Sensitive Skin Redness, itching, burning, dryness, reaction to products.

freshHow to take care of your skin?
It doesn’t matter what skin type you have, there are some basic skin care rules that apply to everyone:

1.Cleanse your face and neck both morning and night.
2.Moisturize after you cleanse.
3.Use an eye cream every night.
4.Exfoliate 1-2 times a week.
5.Use a mask 1-2 times a month.

Normal Skin- Your job is very easy!  You don’t have any skin problems to think about.  As long as you are doing the above steps, you have all great skin your entire life.  Enjoy kate moisturizerit, you are lucky!

Dry Skin– If you have dry skin you are more prone to wrinkles and aging.  Using a heavy cream or oil at night, plus an eye cream is a must!  Use a cleanser that is mild, making sure it is not stripping away any natural oils you have.  The benefit to dry skin?  You rarely get a break out.

Oily Skin- Clay based products are your best friend!  Clay absorbs excess oil without stripping, irritating, or drying you out.  Do not over compensate for your oily skin.  Even though you are oily, you still need to moisturize.  Use a moisturizer that is ‘oil free’.  If you are excessively oily, only moisturize at night.  Oily skin is prone to break outs.  It’s from the excess oil mixing with sweat and dirt, then clogging your pores.  Properly cleansing is crucial!  Use a clay based mask once a week, it will really help!  The good news?  You probably won’t get a wrinkle until you are 60!

eyeCombination Skin- You will be a combination of remedies of both dry and oily skin.  Apply moisturizer to the cheeks only in the morning, and all over at night.  When you use a mask, apply the clay based mask to the t-zone and a moisturizing mask on the cheek area.

Sensitive Skin- There are different levels of sensitivity.  It may be a trial and error to find out what you are sensitive to.  The best products to use are ones that are extremely gently on the skin; without fragrance, alcohol, or harsh preservatives.  Always be gentle when cleansing or applying any products.

What products to use?
I have normal to dry skin and it’s slightly sensitive.  My husband has extreme combination skin.  He can get dry flaky skin on his cheeks while his t-zone is a water slide.  I have changed both of our skin care regimen so many times over the years.  Some things I have loved, some I have liked, and some I did not like.  It’s important to change it up once in a while and try new products.  Your body gets tired of the same old thing and your skin won’t respond the same after long term use.  Here is what we are currently using and loving.

For Me (dry and sensitive):
Cleanser- Fresh Soy Face Cleanser
Day Moisturizer- Kate Somerville Nourish Daily Moisturizerlush angels
Night time Moisturizer- Fresh Seaberry Moisturizing Face Oil
Eye Cream- LUSH Enchanted Eye Cream
Exfloiator- LUSH Sea Salt Scrub
Mask- LUSH Magnaminty

For my Hubby (combination skin):
Cleanser- LUSH Angels on Bare Skin <— This cleanser would work for combination or oily skin
Moisturizer (day & night)- LUSH Imperialis
Eye Cream & Exfoliator- Same as me
Mask- He currently won’t let me put a mask on him so I can’t recommend anything from experience.  Anything that is a clay based mask is where to start.

Finding the correct skin care products for you can be a journey, like finding the perfect pair of jeans.  The products that work for me may not work the same for you, even if we have the same skin type.  This is why I always get samples of everything!  I get a big enough sample to use it for 1-2 weeks at home.  In this amount of time I will know for sure if I love it.  Remember, if it’s liquid you can get a sample.  Stores like Nordstrom and Sephora are always happy to give you a sample of anything, you just have to ask.

Taking care of your skin does take time and effort.  But it’s worth your time.  It doesn’t matter how much weight I gain or lose, or what I’m wearing, if my skin looks beautiful I feel beautiful!

Tips & Tricks #1

  1. tweezermanWhen you feel a zit coming, put an ice cube on it for 5-10 minutes.  Repeat a couple times.
  2. Always use your ring finger and gently dab when applying anything around your eye area, never drag.  The eye area is the thinnest skin on the entire body.
  3. Avoid waxing or tweezing during your menstrual cycle, it hurts a lot more.
  4. Don’t share mascara or eyeliner.  This spreads germs and is a quick way to get an eye infection.
  5. When you get a twitching eye, eat a banana.

Meet the Family

It’s so weird writing a post about me.  I almost don’t know what to say… I’m never the center of attention.  So here it goes.

rb2013-138

About Me- I live in a nothern suburb of Chicago with my husband, John, and 2 kids, Sofia and Caleb.  I consider myself a full time mom, although I work part time as a Trunk Keeper for Matilda Jane Clothing (and now blogging!).  I have always loved skin care, make up and anything to do with beauty.  Even as a teenager I was always buying new make up and skin care products, trying them out and telling my friends what I thought.

rb2013-105

It only seemed natural to take the path of something I love, so 8 years ago I got my esthetician license.  Life quickly got in the way with trying to have a baby, so I never professionally worked in the field.  I have expressed my love of skin care as a hobby.

rb2013-122

As much as I love beautiful things and getting all dressed up and feeling pretty, I spend most of my days in my sweaty work out clothes.  It works for my schedule to work out at 9am, then I have to immediately pick up Sofia from school, maybe run a quick errand, come home and give the kids lunch, play with them, lay Caleb down for a nap and then I get to shower at 2pm.  So for about 4 hours- YUCK!  If you ever see me out and about on a weekday morning you probably won’t recognize me.  I look like a frazzled dirty mess of a person who just crawled out from under a bridge to join society.

About my kids- My daughter, Sofia, is 5 and in her last year of preschool.  She is full of energy and doesn’t stop moving or talking from the minute she wakes up till the moment she falls asleep at night.  She loves an audience!  Any time she gets to perform or we have guests over she becomes a huge show off!  She must think the entire world is her stage.  She is ultra creative and loves to create any kind of art project.  Some times I sit in the next room and just listen to her play.  There is always some dramatic story happening where the princess is falling to her death and the fairy swoops in to save her, but not before the dragon blows cookies on fire into the hot lava pit.  All the while the sister princess stole her dress and lipstick.  haha!  Such an imagination!

My son, Caleb is 2 and is just the opposite.  He is very easy going, laid back and extremely shy.  He is happy cuddling on my lap watching his favorite movie, Despicable Me.  He follows me around the house all day and clings to me where ever we go.  He does his own thing and would prefer no one to bother him.  He does not like strangers!  But for the few people he has let into his heart, he is so sweet and affectionate!  He hugs and kisses and giggles so sweetly!  He tells me he loves me at least 100 times a day.  If I sneeze, he says “bless you mommy.  are you ok?”  Today he held the door open for me as we walked into a store.  He is such a sweet heart!  But don’t get me wrong, he’s a 2 year old boy.  He’s stubborn, tries to be independent when he can, runs around, throws toys, hits his sister, gets mad at the food I serve him… ya know, 2 year old stuff!

rb2013-123rb2013-149 My Hubby- He is the love of my life!  We have been married for 10 years and I would marry him today all over again.  He is the calm half of me.  Without him I would be running around frantic and scatter brained all the time.  He is the best dad and the nicest, sweetest man you will ever meet.  And handsome!!  I really got a winner!  We are by no means a “perfect” couple.  In 10 years we have had our fair share of fights and bumps in the road.  The important thing is we always talk about it and work it out.  We make an adjustment if need be, and move forward.  At the end of the day, we are best friends.  Really!  We laugh and cry together.  We are happy on a Friday night going out on a fancy date, or sitting at home in our pj’s watching a movie and eating popcorn.  We love spending time together!  I still count the hours and minutes every day till he gets home from work.

10 Gift Ideas for You!

Every year I spend so much time planning and shopping for everyone in my life that I forget about myself.  Then mid December my hubby will ask me what I want for Christmas and I never have an answer for him.  So I end up saying something like “I saw some cute earrings at Nordstrom”.  Then he gets me earring I don’t really like.  I pretend that I like them, then I exchange them without him knowing….  Is anyone with me?

Let’s make it easy on everyone who wants to buy us gifts this year.  Most people are busy and they don’t want you to say something general like “some kind of cool bath gift set”.  They want something specific like- “Lush has awesome gift sets, any of them are great, but my favorite is Jolly Holidays”.  Here are some great gift ideas for yourself that are at the top of my list!  If you can’t tell, I love shopping at Nordstrom!  It’s hands down my favorite store!
